With his raw, gritty raps, Ugandan musician Ecko Bazz has challenged preconceptions of East Africa’s emerging rap industry. Since his EP Tuli Banyo was published by Hakuna Kulala in 2018, there has been no doubt about this Kampala-based rapper’s sense of his own splendour.
As he journeys from stage to stage across Central and Eastern Europe, performing to enthusiastic audiences engulfed by his emotional performances, there is a sense that his purpose is taking shape. Ecko Bazz raps violently in his tribe’s Bantu language of Luganda. A spewing blood voice, as violent as it is pained.
