Canadian-Tanzanian singer-songwriter Michelle Hopkins sees music as both a way to connect with the community and to process and categorize her emotions. Her music, which veers between R&B, pop, soul, and alternative genres, reflects the love, grief, and life she has experienced.
Growing up in a multicultural household, Hopkins was exposed to a wide variety of music. Hopkins’ debut single, “Honest,” which exhibited her ability for heartfelt songwriting, was released in 2020 after years of developing her skill through performing at open mics and local venues. The follow-up song from Michelle, “Careless over Coward,” showcased Hopkins’ range as a performer with a more upbeat, rock-influenced sound.
Drawing on her cultural heritage to create a unique sound that reflects her roots, she hopes to continue making music that inspires and empowers others while staying true to her roots and cultural identity.
