Kamal Tabikha on guitar and bass, and Zeina Aly on vocals, make up the Egyptian band Coke Machine, a shoegaze-inspired post-punk duo.
The pair began in 2013 with the goal of “exploring concepts or power dynamics that exist within contemporary cultural identity, where the facade sort of collapses on itself, where the aberrations in logic play out in our current circumstances, or in the commonplace,” using the city as their focal point.
Aly is the main writer of the emotive, deep, and occasionally darkly hilarious lyrics, which she transforms into drowsy, reverbed melody lines over Tabikha’s riffs or chord sequences.
The pair took a gamble with their home recordings, becoming one of the most sought-after brands in the world, thanks to a shared passion for music and a need to express their disenchantment creatively.
