Donald Otim, better known by his stage name MAUIMØON, is a Ugandan singer-songwriter who is reinventing the underground Alté scene’s new sound.
Through his consistency, fast-rising talent has carved out a space for himself. It’s not surprising that his sound defies boundaries and conventional expectations as he was brought up in Rwanda and has motives from R&B, Afro-pop, and hip-hop.
His first inspirations included musicians like Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Brandy, and Pharrell, to mention a few. Since the release of his Alté song Sweeta in 2022, MAUIMØON’s sound has developed further, receiving a sizable number of plays on Apple Music and Spotify.
The sound of MAUIMØON and the gorgeous melodic weaving bring to mind timeless songs by legends like Craig David and Joe Thomas from the late 1990s and early 2000s. His use of harmonizing is particularly notable; it draws the listener in and makes an impact they can feel.
