
Mejja (born Major Nameye Khadija, 23 May 1986), also known as “Okonkwo,” is a Kenyan Genge artist recognised for his humorous storytelling and relatable lyrics in Sheng. He rose to prominence with his 2008 hit Jana Kuliendaje and later became a key member of the group The Kansoul. He remains one of Kenya’s most influential and consistent contemporary artists.
Early Life and Background
Mejja was born in Majengo Nyeri and raised by his single mother, Khadija, who played a central role in his upbringing. His deep respect for her is reflected in his music, where he often refers to himself as “Mtoto wa Khadija” (son of Khadija).
He developed an interest in music at a young age, starting out in primary school where he formed a group called Ghetto Clan with his brother, Wambugu.
Career
Breakthrough (2008)
Mejja gained national recognition with the release of Jana Kuliendaje in 2008, a hit song that showcased his unique storytelling style. The track earned him a Chaguo la Teeniez Award, marking the beginning of his mainstream success.
Calif Records Era
He was signed to Calif Records, one of Kenya’s most influential music labels, where he further developed his sound and gained a wider audience within the Genge genre.
The Kansoul (2014–Present)
In 2014, Mejja co-founded the trio The Kansoul alongside:
