Ethereal and yet simultaneously down-to-earth producer/instrumentalist/singer/songwriter Mars Baby, known formally as Jesse Meintjies, is one of South Africa’s most promising artists who has begun his ascent into the local cinematic-musical sphere.

While Mars Baby is still far from creating a distinctive sound he can call his own, the real romanticism of his lyrics will make an enduring effect. He appears to be improving himself with each stride ahead, putting up a stylish blend of bedroom pop and R&B. Mars, who has spent his time between Cape Town, South Africa, and Johannesburg, says that his travels have unquestionably influenced his musical style.

Mars Baby acknowledges that his distinction from other regional producers is that he “is absolutely extremely interested in letting musicians express themselves to their utmost and most raw extents.” Mars claims he is determined to create a very minimal blank slate, in contrast to other producers who are more focused on other elements of the beat, to give the other artist (whether he or another artist) freedom to “talk on some stuff they genuinely feel.”
