Josiah Makoela is the true name of Josiah De Disciple, a South African producer who was born in Alexandra. Josiah was a founding member of the groundbreaking amapiano duo JazziDisciples, and was born in 1991.
Josiah Makoela attended Alexander’s North View High School. After that, he travelled to the University of Johannesburg to study.
By blending amapiano with surprising sounds pulled from jazz, deep house, Afropop, and soul, he has become one of the genre’s most respected producers. He is said to be one of his community’s most popular house producers.
“Spirit of Makoela Vol 2: The Re-Introduction,” released in 2021, pushed the aural limit by introducing live instrumentation into the traditionally synth-heavy genre, an aesthetic move indicated by “Umbuso Wabamnyama,” his 2020 collaborative EP with vocalist Boohle.
Since going solo in 2018, he’s done exceptionally well as an independent musician. He’s collaborated with Okmalumkoolkat, Vigro Deep, Boohle, Nomisupasta, DJ Buckz, Mr Souls, Hitmanonset, DJ Kaznonva, and more.
